Good Bye January

by MamaJil on February 1, 2012

It seems a bit unbelievable that the first month of this new year has already passed us by. When I realized that yesterday morning, I had to sit and think about the past thirty days and wonder did I do all I had set out to do?  Have I accomplished all I had hoped in January? I am happy to say that for the most part  I can say yes!

For me January has been a month of reorganization and  getting acclimated back into my routine since I spent all of past several months in bed sick. It has felt good to plan, get together, and have people over.

Its been a blessing to see the children think about others and wanting to be a blessing as we launched our new years Blessed to be a Blessing project. Its also been a good month to learn that it is easy to want to do good for those we perceive are just like us, and a bit more challenging to think about how to bless those who are different than us.

In January I was reminded the joy that comes from laying down my plan and yielding to the path God has set for my days, although I still resist and have to be reminded daily to seek HIM first, not my day timer.

Our favorite read a loud this month has been Mr. Poppers Penguins it really was a cute story!

Our favorite recipes this month were Fried Eggplant and Curried lentils.

The fried eggplant was an easy made up recipe we simply peeled and cubed the eggplant, salted the cubes well and sprinkled them with Italian seasoning then dipped them in a beaten egg and milk mixture and rolled them in yellow stone ground corn meal then we pan fried them in olive oil until tender and slightly golden. I served this with spaghetti sauce over it, with a side of angel hair pasta, it was a big hit this month! I even found some of the kids snitching the left overs for breakfast!

The other big hit, the Curry lentil soup was a recipe I originally found on one of my favorite blogs Spilled: Because My Cup Overflows, the original recipe can be found here but true to mamajil form I did tweak it, only because I am all about improvising….so it began one day when I really wanted some curried lentils but I didn’t have any beef bouillon…but I did have vegetable bouillon…..so we used that instead….. and this month I made some home made cayenne pepper flakes…so I added some of them….and I was on a big kale kick so right before I served the soup I added some raw chopped up kale, the heat from the soup maked it wilt a bit and it was so yummy!! I will say that the original recipe can totally stand alone, this is an inexpensive, hearty meal we serve it over baked barley or brown rice but my bloggy friend serves it over jasmine rice and I know that has to be very delicious too!

My favorite moments with the kids this month have been:  My baby girl coming to me in a panic, because she didn’t know how to speak Chinese, I am not sure what prompted that panicked moment…. after all none of us speak Chinese. Another funny  occurred when the Princess decided  to read a novel (mind you she is  in kindergarten working on  sounding out short vowel words…) when I suggested she begin with an early reader she told me not to worry she would figure it out, and” anyways” she says “I can use my  imagination”…..creative reading at its best!  The 4 middlers, have had a great time this month enjoying the mild weather and building forts in the woods, I love to see them enjoy  the outdoors and play hard! Even if they all seem to be covered with poison ivy its been a lot of fun for them! Its been great to see the teenager strong in her convictions and growing in her relationship with the Lord, I am very blessed to see her grow and mature. My M-Girl has begun blogging this month you can peak at what she has to say here, Our oldest daughter has transferred to a private college and is doing well and…..(drum roll please)

Our oldest son and his wife have found out that the baby (our second grandchild) is a BOY…..it has been 9 years since the last time this family had a baby boy so we are so so excited about this little boy!! A grand son….wow!

Lastly the scriptures that seared my heart the most this month are found in Colossians

Colossians 1:9-12

9 So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.

11 We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, 12 always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light.

Paul was writing to the Christian’s  of Colossae. I’ve read this passage several times before but this month what struck me was the manner in which Paul prayed for these people, the prayer was so thorough in covering every aspect of their walk with Christ.  It has challenged me to pray in this manner for my children. Don’t get me wrong I have always prayed for my children but this prayer seemed to jump out at me. What would happen if  I prayed daily that  God would give my children complete knowledge of his will and total spiritual wisdom and understanding. What would happen if I was very specific and prayed that as they grow to know God better that their lives will produce an abundance of good fruit and that they would always honor and please God. How powerful to pray that they would be filled with joy because after all the joy of the Lord is our strength. As we pray joy into their lives and strength to have the endurance and patience that they need imagine the spiritual growth and blessings they will experience.

I just love it when the word of God jumps out and grabs me, this month it was this passage, I am so curious to see what God does as I begin praying this passage over my children, my husband and my friends.

It has been a great month, a great start to a new year! I am ready for February and all its lessons, and experiences!
